Temporary Disability Retirement List (TDRL)
TDRL is the Temporary Disability Retirement program designed to enable all eligible members with a rated disability the opportunity to receive retirement benefits including medical coverage for members and dependents and a monthly stipend until medical conditions can become stabilized or corrected.
- TDRL is enacted by General Military Law under Title 10 USC Chapter 61, section 1200 series, and further outlined by the Headquarters of the Military Departments through Directives and Instructions. The Department of the Navy has designated SECNAVINST 1850.4F and 1850.1 as the governing instruction for the administration of Disability Evaluation. DoDM 1338.18 Vol 1 dictates IDES separation processing and operations for both command and PEBLOS.
- Under Memorandum from Assistant Secretary of the Navy dated February 7, 2017, TDRL is a maximum 3-year program. Members placed onto the TDRL program may spend a maximum of 3 years on the TDRL program.
- General Military Law mandates service members assigned to the TDRL complete a physical exam every 12-18 months for their TDRL referred condition in order for their case to be adjudicated by the Physical Evaluation Board for placement on the Permanent Disability Retirement List (PDRL), separated with severance, or found fit.
- At the end of the 3 years, General Military Law requires all DoD pay and benefits to cease, regardless of reason for a delay in final adjudication by the Physical Evaluation Board.
